An Augusta man crashed into a North Augusta apartment complex while fleeing from police Tuesday night, officers said.

According to a news release, a North Augusta Public Safety officer stopped a vehicle about 10:20 p.m. at Georgia and West Buena Vista avenues for speeding. As the officer approached the vehicle the driver, later identified as Earl Jamahl Spencer, 25, sped away.

Officers chased the vehicle until it lost control at West Buena Vista and Georgetown Drive while turning left. Police said the vehicle left the road, traveled up a bank of grass and into the living room of Apartment 812 at Georgetown Villas.

Melba Garrett, 77, who was in the apartment, was treated for minor injuries sustained from flying debris. She was later taken to a hospital for further treatment.

Spencer was charged with driving under the influence, failure to stop for blue lights and siren, and driving without a license.
